Where did you come from?
Going all the way up to
The top of your family tree
Stretching out your branches
Far and wide
And... What about me?
I got my smile from my father
I got the freckles from my momma's side
I share the endless worries with my siblings
I got trouble sleeping at night
My roots are in the northern south and
The western salty sea
My great-grandfather kept majestic birds and strawberries
While I do my best just try and keep
my few plants alive
I think my taste in music is my own
Been a dreamer for
As long as I can remember
And I've loved to game since I was 9
I try to share my dad's passion for bikes
Because every time he talks his eyes light up
I'm glad to see they mirror mine
I think I've known love, in a way
That has skipped a generation
Learn from your mistakes, or
Pass them on to your children
There lived a man across the street
Gray was his name
Gray was friends with Greg
Gray loved grey things
"It's nice", he'd say
"It's neutral"
“Grey fits in with everything and anything
Except for maybe a slightly different hue of grey
But I suppose that's more of a metallic blue”
Anyway,
Gray had many other acquaintances in his vicinity.
Some liked him for who he was,
Some saw him as a local novelty
"Why is even your garden hose grey?" They'd ask him
"Because that is what I love", he'd say warmly
Gray had many political opinions
Though he was never one for sharing
He knew, if he started speaking his mind,
Unrest would follow with Greg.
And if anything, Gray wanted to avoid this as much as he could
Lest he'd lose his last sort of friend
Gray used to live in a world filled with color
With songbirds and singing and something or other
He was a fairytale artist with a twist and a spin
But one day a painting he made showed his sin
The abhorrent shock of a crowd filled with mockery
Tomatoes and bricks would be thrown to his property
Ever since, Gray's steps felt heavier
And he'd finally live up to his name
In time, the riots would calm
When you're boring, the booing and shaming will stop
That is where our story should have ended.
If not for a small gift in the mailbox.
A token of appreciation
For a resonating idea
A postcard with a peculiar purple flower
And a "thank you" in writing
In awe,
Gray framed the purple flower
As it lied by his bedside
The changes started happening suspiciously slowly
Townfolk whispered of a rumble deep in the dark of the night
And a maniacal cackle shaking the silence
Gray was his usual smiling self.
Until one summer night, where it all went to hell
A big bomb filled with rainbows and glitter
For the days where the world feels shitter and shitter
The town square was painted in purple and yellow and green
And a spectrum of colours for all to be seen
Gray ran away like a rat in the night
Cackling like a madman, straight out of sight
Sometimes, you’ll hear Greg when he's drunk on a Monday
Speak ill of a friend or a man who was grey
But turn to the street that is right across mine
And see a small girl with some paint in her eyes
Sit down and listen ever so closely
And see what could happen if you live your life happily
My friend has a picture of his father
Taped on the sun visor of his car
It's held together by an elastic band
In case things in life don't go as planned
A precious find amongst the travel bags
Next to the riches and the rags
On a road far from here
Across the desert, amongst the stars
You'll take him with you wherever you are
Growing closer than you've ever been
My friend, there's a light in your shoulder
Watching over you as you go
And when things don't go to plan
You'll know you'll find your way home
